This exhibition is an interactive, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! There were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was, and continues to be, a small town, like so many others.The story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here, raised their families, loved, lost, thought, and created. The objects in the museum's collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.Each artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.Welcome to Maitland's Attic, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland's past. About the Exhibition Mär Martinez, a Syrian American artist and Fulbright scholar, presents new work developed during her 2024–25 Fulbright research in Istanbul. Her project investigates traditional Turkish and Middle Eastern textile techniques while reflecting on themes of urbanization, surveillance, and cultural memory. Drawing from nighttime walks through Istanbul's neighborhoods, Martinez transforms architectural barriers, barbed wire, fences, and centuries old textile patterns, into motifs of both resistance and resilience. Her haunting paintings explore personal heritage, global textile history, and contemporary social commentary in poetic, layered form. The initial threads of this, her first solo museum exhibition, created in Istanbul and New York, began at the Art & History Museums of Maitland during her 2021–2023 Studio Artist Residency. This edible plant walk introduces participants to the rich diversity of Central Floridaâs native and wild-growing plants. Participants will learn about safe and ethical foraging practices. Participants will also learn to identify therapeutic species, edible plants, plants with cultural and ecological importance, and beneficial âweedsâ that thrive in our ecosystem. The play switches swiftly from movement to dialogue, and each physical number moves the plot forward as we see past and future collide. Of Irish heritage, Mel is constantly straddling the worlds between the motherland and her daughters' childhood home in the U.S. When all four family members gather for Bree's baby shower in 2036, a heartbreaking secret is revealed. The family's experiences parallel that of their Irish ancestors, accused of witchcraft. These O'Malley women, separated by generations, have been subject to the same pain and injustices of womanhood. Participants will be using household items to learn how to make lithography prints. Each participant will receive a sheet of aluminum foil mounted to a wooden board and a Sharpie to draw images on. Once students have finalized their image, they will use Coca-Cola to "etch" the plate, rinse with water, dry, and apply canola oil, then buff it into the place. They can begin the inking to the plate, run it through the press, or create a rubbing with a wooden spoon. This workshop will provide participants with an idea of how the process of lithography works with a low-stakes and low-cost approach. Each person leaves with a new skill and a print. Today (It's Not OK)A Special Exhibition by Parker SketchArt For All Spaces presents Today (It's Not OK), a powerful and timely exhibition by Orlando-based artist Parker Sketch, opening with a public reception on June 18th , 2026, in the Side Gallery at CityArts in downtown Orlando. The exhibition runs through July 11th , 2026. Rooted in painting and art historical awareness, Today (It's Not OK) reflects an emotional and political reckoning shaped by the turbulence of the present moment. The exhibition draws from abstraction and expressive mark-making while carrying a deeper conceptual weight—revealing works that appear visually inviting at first glance, yet speak directly to contemporary realities of chaos, oppression, and uncertainty. As novelist and cultural icon Toni Morrison stated:"All good art is political! There is none that isn't. And the ones that try hard not to be political are political by saying, 'We love the status quo.'" That philosophy resonates strongly throughout this exhibition. Reflecting on the work, Parker Sketch shares: "The past year has been challenging. World news and politics are depressing. Recently I have been avoiding conceptual art and pop art because working on these styles doesn't feel right for me in this moment in history. Most of my recent work has been abstract and expressive. While I was working on these pieces, I found that even though I was trying to avoid it, I was creating extremely personal and political work. At first glance, these pieces seem like pleasant abstracts, but they are speaking to today's world of chaos and oppression." About the ArtistParker Sketch earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has built a multifaceted career grounded in painting, art history, and professional arts practice. His experience includes working in galleries, frame shops, museums, and fine-art fashion studios, where he has served as an artist, designer, and project manager. Her project investigates traditional Turkish and Middle Eastern textile techniques while reflecting on themes of urbanization, surveillance, and cultural memory. Drawing from nighttime walks through Istanbul's neighborhoods, Martinez transforms architectural barriers, barbed wire, fences, hostile design, into motifs of resistance and reweaving. Her haunting wood paintings explore personal heritage, global textile history, and contemporary social commentary in poetic, layered form.
