This exhibition is an interactive, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! There were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was, and continues to be, a small town, like so many others.The story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here, raised their families, loved, lost, thought, and created. The objects in the museum's collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.Each artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.Welcome to Maitland's Attic, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland's past. About the Exhibition From soot on paper to felt, The Situated Body, an exhibition of the work of Mexican sculptor Jacobo Alonso, redefines the classical depictions of the human form through contemporary materials. Alonso transforms traditional drawing and sculptural practices into expressive and tactile abstractions, all referencing the configuration and movement of the human form. Inspired by both pre-Columbian traditions and the Art Center's Mayan Revival architecture, his work, some created during his 2025 residency at A&H, challenges assumptions about form, identity, and materiality. Alonso stated, "Each body possesses its own geography and undergoes numerous inevitable mutations that reveal the genealogy of its image and form. It is a territory inherent to the individual, tracing the constellation of their identity yet always appealing to an inherent instability". This exhibition is the first time that Alonso's "fumage" works of soot on paper will be shown alongside his vibrant sculptural works of reconfigured felt. Designed to provide an unprecedented view of Earth's land and ice surfaces, NISAR is the first satellite to use dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar, NASA's L-band and ISRO's S-band, to deliver high-resolution, all-weather data with global coverage every 12 days. This mission represents a milestone in U.S.-India space collaboration, marking the first time the two agencies have co-developed hardware for an Earth-observing satellite. Zahi ZallouaViolence Resistance and Disruption in Fanon and ZizekIn a novel pairing of anti-colonial theorist Frantz Fanon with Marxist-Lacanian philosopher Slavoj Zizek Zahi Zalloua explores the ways both thinkers expose and disrupt the violence of political structures. This foray advances an anti-racist critique describing how ontology operates in a racial matrix to produce some human bodies that count and others that do not. For Fanon and Zizek the violence of ontology must be met with another form of violence a disruptive and resisting violence that delegitimizes the logic of the symbolic order and troubles its collective fantasies. Whereas Fanon begins his resistance to ontology by exposing its historical linkages to Europe's destructive imperialist and colonialist procedures Zizek premises his work on the refusal to accept the totality of ontology. Because of these different points of intervention Fanon and Zizek together offer a powerful alternative to the liberal anti-racist paradigm whose propensity for identity politics silences the cry of the dispossessed and forecloses radical disruption. Avoiding contemporary separatist temptations and breaking with a sentimentalist non-violent futurology that announces more of the same Fanon and Zizek point in a different direction one that frames disruptions to racist and colonial ontologies in inventive ways eschewing identitarian thought in favor of cross-racial solidarity a collective struggle for freedom and equality.BiographyZahi Zalloua is Cushing Eells Professor of Philosophy and Literature and Director of Indigeneity Race and Ethnicity Studies at Whitman College. He is also editor of The Comparatist. His teaching and scholarship engage critical Black studies the posthuman and the Palestinian question. Title: A study in contrasts: epitaxial integration of III-Vs with dielectrics for novel lasersThis talk will highlight recent progress in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) regrowth of laser structures that harness the contrasting properties of III-V semiconductors and dielectric materials to realize new device architectures.About the Speaker: Minjoo Larry Lee received his Bachelor's degree from Brown University and his Ph.D. from MIT, both in materials science. In 2008, he joined Yale University as an assistant professor in EE, and in 2016, he joined the ECE department at UIUC, where he is now a Professor and Director of the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Lab. His research focuses on epitaxial materials and devices, and he is the author of over 190 papers and conference proceedings. He is an Optica Fellow and a recipient of the DARPA Young Faculty Award and NSF CAREER award. Join us! Life Explorers Speaker Series: Saving Florida's Roadside WildflowersFlorida is one of the most biodiverse states in the country — and one of the fastest growing. As development fragments natural habitat, pollinators and native plants are increasingly pushed to the margins. But what if those margins could become part of the solution? In this engaging presentation, the Florida Wildflower Foundation explores how roadside wildflowers can support pollinators, reconnect fragmented habitats, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance the beauty and identity of our communities. Drawing on research, real-world case studies, and decades of collaboration with FDOT and local governments, this talk explains how reduced mowing and thoughtful roadside management benefit both nature and people. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of why pollinator declines matter, how native wildflowers outperform turf grasses along roadsides, and how Florida's wildflower programs work at the state and local levels. The presentation also highlights practical ways individuals, communities, and local governments can play a role in protecting and expanding roadside wildflower habitat. Stacey is the Executive Director of the Florida Wildflower Foundation as well as an environmental educator with a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and a master's degree in liberal studies from Rollins College, where she also serves as an adjunct professor. She is also the co-author of the book Native Plants for Florida Garden which she co-wrote with botanist, restoration ecologist and certified horticulturist, Nancy Bissett. "Print and Power: Identity, Knowledge, and Resistance in Colonial Mozambique" This presentation explores the role of print media in shaping and contesting imperial and cultural imaginaries in colonial Mozambique. Focusing on the dialogue between O Brado Africano and the Boletim Geral das Colonias, I analyze how the written word both reflected and resisted the ideological foundations of Portuguese colonial rule. Through figures like Joao Albasini and the early Mozambican press, I examine how knowledge, identity, and utopic political visions were constructed, challenged, and disseminated. Drawing on theorists such as Benedict Anderson, Raymond Williams, and Leela Gandhi, this work interrogates the intersections of print capitalism, colonial education, and affective communities to better understand the cultural legacy of the Lusophone world during the early 20th century.

UCF Screenprint Show at The Chained Gallery / Framework Coffee 1201 N Mills Ave Closing Reception Saturday March 28th 7:00-10:00pm The University of Central Florida's Screenprinting courses (ART 3433C), 2025/2026, led by Ashley Taylor and Lorna Ruth Galloway, present a collection of prints exploring both traditional and contemporary processes. Students worked with hand-drawn analog positives, digital spot color separations, CMYK process printing, and collaborative editioning projects.This exhibition features fourteen prints by nine students majoring in Studio Art and Graphic Design. Several works were created in collaboration with poetry students from Brian Turner's poetry classes, highlighting the dialogue between image and text. Together, the prints reflect an engaged process, thoughtful experimentation, and the development of individual approaches to screenprinting.

This edible plant walk introduces participants to the rich diversity of Central Florida's native and wild-growing plants. Participants will learn about safe and ethical foraging practices. Orlando Story Club is a live storytelling competition that takes place at CityArts Orlando (39 S Magnolia Ave). All regular shows begin at 7:00 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m.Every Orlando Story Club event has a theme. Title: Inverse designed, densely integrated classical and quantum photonicsAbstract: Recent breakthroughs in photonics design, along with new nanofabrication approaches and heterogeneous integration play crucial roles in building photonics for applications including optical interconnects and quantum technologies. This design breakthrough is named photonic inverse design, and refers to efficiently searching through the space of all possible photonic device geometries, within fabrication constraints, and by employing fast electromagnetic solvers and optimization tools. Additionally, new photonic platforms have been developed which enable functionalities beyond silicon on insulator, including silicon carbide, diamond, and Titanium:sapphire on insulator, as well as ultra-strong electro-optic materials, such as strontium and barium titanate. With these new approaches to design and fabrication, novel optoelectronic devices and systems have been designed and demonstrated, including error-free and fast chip-to-chip and on-chip optical interconnects compatible with commercial foundries, chip scale Ti:sapphire lasers and amplifiers, CMOS compatible isolators and laser frequency stabilizers, and silicon carbide and diamond chip-scale quantum technologiesAbout the Speaker: Jelena Vuckovic (PhD Caltech 2002) is the Jensen Huang Professor of Global Leadership, Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford.
